Recycling Made Easy

Did you know that Washington County has a recycling program titled, “Recycle at Work”? The program, run by Will Elder, program educator for the Health & Human Services division of Washington County, offers free on-site technical assistance for businesses looking to reduce waste and implement in-house recycling programs.
Businesses throughout the Portland Metropolitan area throw away more than 100,000 tons of recyclable material annually. This program provides assistance to businesses in Washington County with efforts to reduce waste and recycle, and to help refine or establish recycling programs, such as:
- Evaluating a company’s “waste stream” to identify what can and cannot be recycled
- Helping set up or expanding existing recycling and waste reduction programs
- Providing tips on how to reduce waste and increase reuse and recycling
- Researching recycling options for specific materials
- Supplying free desk-side collection boxes and larger containers for recyclable materials
- Providing free posters, signage and educational materials
- Training and educating office and janitorial staff
- Research purchasing recycled-content materials
- Helping start an employee “Green Team”
In addition to helping businesses incorporate green habits into the workplace, the program also awards those which have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability. Its Recycle at Work Business Award recognizes local businesses that have sustainable practices in place and excel in waste reduction, and recipients are lauded for their efforts via the program’s website and newsletter.
